Artful Dining Auction Item Descriptions

Sandstone and Sea Shells Shaggy Rug
Chris Gustin
Retail: $360
Opening Bid: $175
This rug was hand-woven on a Swedish countermarche loom from upholstery selvedges in shades of brown, cream, rust and gold. It measures 56” x 88” and is bound on two ends. The colors were hand-selected prior to weaving to create a segue from one tone to another, allowing the rug to blend with many decors.  Chris specializes in making hand-woven rugs from recycled material. Most of the supplies used for the rugs are byproducts of other industries, where they are considered "scrap."   Our mission is to keep this usable material from the waste stream.  We do custom spinning, dyeing and weaving and work with clients and interior decorators to create special pieces of art.

Music Stand
R. Thomas Tedrowe
Retail: $1,450
Opening bid: $725
This hand crafted Ebonized Mahogany Music Stand, designed and made by Tom Tedrowe in his Brown County studio, reflects Tom’s years of training and experience as a studio furniture maker.  The piece is sculptural, yet fully functional.  The stand is adjustable and collapsible and designed and built as a piece of functional art.  Apart from the time spent designing the piece, over 80 hours is required to build the music stand.

Tea Party
Cheri Platter
Retail: $315
Opening bid: $150
From Faerie Hollow Studio, a five-piece porcelain pottery tea set includes: tray with delphinium floral design, large coffee pot, tea pot and a cream and sugar set in Chinese turquoise celadon glaze with applied slip trailing designs. Cheri has had a love affair with pottery since 1975. Her first studio was located in Grabill , Indiana , moved to Brown County in 1992 and built a new studio behind an old log cabin and barn.

Fountain
Larry Spears
Retail: $350
Opening bid: $175
Thrown and altered stoneware fountain; green and gold ash glazes, satin black glazed interior and a reticulated glaze applied to exterior for texture.  Thrown and altered stones moveable to accentuate the sound of water.  Reduction fired in a down draft kiln.  Larry creates functional and decorative reduction-fired porcelain and stoneware pottery.  He brings a rich color palette to his wares with a wide variety of glazes and glazing techniques. As a primarily self-taught potter, Larry has been working at his craft for over 20 years.   Larry’s work is shown primarily in his studio, at various juried art shows during the year, and at numerous galleries in the USA .

Crown of Leaves Lamp
Anne Ryan Miller
Retail: $595
Opening bid: $297.50
Stained glass lamp with metal overlay design on a “Tree Trunk” base. By using a metal overlay technique, Anne hand-cuts very intricate designs. Using landscape and wildlife motifs, she creates a pictorial effect. By applying the metal on the front and back of opalescent glass, Anne achieves an enormous amount of depth. By allowing the natural light to diffuse around the metal from the backside, she obtains a shadowy, misty effect, allowing the front to display a tantalizingly strong silhouette. This is an original and unusual technique.

Trail Number Nine – Brown County State Park
Daren Pitts Redman
Retail: $900
Opening bid: $500
This photo taken on trail nine in October 2005 inspired my rotary cutting motif in the blocks. Hand-dyed cottons by Daren and Luan Fabrics.  Daren became very familiar with using fabrics and patterns from a young age. A few years ago, she took a quilting class and loved her quilts so much that she decided to display them on art canvas. When she isn’t working in her big, red barn studio she likes to play her violin, play with her cats, and on weekends, she and her husband bike at least 50 miles.

“Artful Spirit” Fiesta Fantasy
Dixie Ferrer
Retail: $185.00
Opening bid: $90.00
As an artist, Dixie has always embraced nature and the tactile elements it offers, and an ethereal interpretation of the "Spirit of Life" is evident in her work. Traditional oils, mixed media collage paintings, and mixed media sculptures are all used to communicate her passion. The “Artful Spirit” piece is a mixed media figurative sculpture.

“Brown County Drought
Jim Conner
Retail: $300
Opening bid: $150
Iron and forged steel sculpture with a geode flower from a creek in Brown County .  The stand is sandstone from a quarry in Brazil , Indiana .

“Snow”
Frederick W. Rigley

Retail: $925
Opening bid: $300
Frederick W. Rigley, artist and teacher, began his career as a teenager. Since then his life-long profession has been painting. Working in oil, watercolor, and acrylic, etc., he is best known for his landscapes and seascapes, which he paints on the East Coast, in the South, and in Brown County , Indiana , where he makes his home and maintains a studio.  Mr. Rigley studied at the Art Students' League, New York , and the Ringling School of Art, Sarasota .

“Mountain Range”
Carrie Foley
Retail: $200
Opening Bid: $100
One of a kind necklace reticulated silver pendant on a neck wire with 24k gold overlay on surface using the Ceumbu technique.

“Brown County Maple Leaves”
George Goehl
Retail: $245
Opening bid: $125
This wall sculpture is comprised of flame colored copper and brass leaves.  The size works well above a mantel or couch.  The tools George uses for metal working were in existence a hundred years ago. Cutting, bending and shaping are all done by hand. The main process used for joining metals is brazing. Heating the metal till it is red hot and melting bronze rod into the joints. When the bronze cools the two pieces are fixed in place. Each gold or yellow bit of metal you’ll see on one of my pieces has been brazed. The time difference between the right time and the wrong time to add the bronze is the blink of the eye. It’s more a matter of "feeling" rather than "knowing".

“Spring”
Irene Joslin
Retail $425
Opening bid: $150
Framed pencil drawing of little girl holding a flower.  Irene is an award-winning fine pencil portraiture, landscapes and published cartoon artist.  Irene’s fine art, which has found a place in juried exhibitions such as the annual Hoosier Salon and the Indiana Heritage Arts exhibits, is primarily done using graphite pencil. The tightly detailed portraits and landscapes are occasionally enhanced with subtle tints.

“I’m Curious”
Irene Joslin
Retail: $225
Opening bid: $95.00
Framed pencil and ink cartoon in color featuring a guy and gal walking looking at each other, with thought bubbles floating above them. Irene is a cartoonist and is The Democrat’s editorial cartoonist receiving second-place accolades among all non-daily newspapers for her work, which the judges said were well-crafted cartoons with a point to make. Beautifully drawn!
